The Impact of Driving Anxiety: from New to Experienced Drivers

Over the past month I have spoken to several people who have told me that they only feel confident driving very locally – within the confines of the town where they live – and rely on others to take them further afield. For some this was a fairly recent development, whereas for others, they didn’t build their confidence sufficiently after passing their driving test.

Driving is a crucial skill for independence and mobility, but a lack of confidence behind the wheel can have profound effects on individuals across different stages of life. From learners to older drivers, anxiety can significantly limit freedom and contribute to a sense of isolation, especially when it comes to navigating busy roads like motorways.

New drivers often face anxiety, particularly in situations involving heavy traffic or complex roadways. This anxiety can stem from inexperience, fear of making mistakes, or the overwhelming nature of busy roads. This lack of confidence can lead to avoiding driving altogether, restricting access to social, educational, or employment opportunities. For young people, this can mean missing out on important social interactions and experiences, potentially impacting their social development and sense of independence.

As drivers age, they may experience a decline in confidence due to health issues, reduced reaction times, or a lack of familiarity with driving conditions, especially following the pandemic. For older adults, driving on motorways can be particularly daunting. The fast pace, multiple lanes, and need for quick decision-making can cause stress and anxiety.

When older drivers lose confidence, they might start avoiding certain roads, times of day, or driving altogether. This can lead to a shrinking world, where they may feel isolated and disconnected from friends, family, and activities they once enjoyed.

The consequences of driving anxiety extend beyond the individual. For families and communities, it can mean an increased reliance on others for transportation, which can be burdensome. It can also limit access to essential services, like healthcare, particularly for those living in areas with limited public transportation.

Addressing driving anxiety is crucial for maintaining independence and quality of life.

Driving anxiety is a significant issue that can affect anyone, regardless of age. By understanding its impact and exploring strategies to build confidence, individuals can reclaim their freedom and reduce the risk of isolation.

It’s a journey that requires patience and support, but with the right approach, which may include a course of hypnotherapy, it’s possible to overcome these challenges and enjoy the full benefits of driving.
