Scanxiety

What is Scanxiety? Scanxiety is a term used to describe the anxiety and fear that people often experience before, during, or after medical scans, such as MRI, CT, or PET scans.


These feelings can be particularly intense for individuals who have previously been diagnosed with a serious illness, such as cancer, or who are undergoing scans to determine if a condition has returned or worsened. The uncertainty and anticipation of potentially life-altering results can lead to heightened stress levels, often leading to physical symptoms like sweating, increased heart rate, or difficulty breathing.


The effects of scanxiety can be far-reaching, impacting both mental and physical well-being. For some, the anticipation of bad news can lead to sleepless nights, irritability, and difficulty concentrating. This heightened state of anxiety can persist long after the scan, affecting a person’s daily life, relationships, and overall quality of life.


In extreme cases, scanxiety can cause individuals to delay or avoid necessary scans altogether, which can lead to a delayed diagnosis or treatment and potentially worse health outcomes.


Scanxiety doesn’t just affect the individual undergoing the scan; it can also have a knock-on effect on their family and friends. Loved ones may feel helpless, not knowing how to support someone experiencing such intense anxiety. This can strain relationships, as the person affected by scanxiety may withdraw or become overly focused on the impending scan, creating an emotional distance from those around them.


Hypnotherapy can be an effective way to manage scanxiety, offering a natural and non-invasive approach to alleviating the intense fear and worry associated with medical scans. This form of therapy works by guiding individuals into a deeply relaxed state, where the subconscious mind becomes more open to positive suggestions and therapeutic techniques.

Techniques such as deep breathing, visualisation, and positive affirmations can be practised in the lead-up to a scan, helping to reduce anxiety levels in real time. However, it is possible to manage this anxiety, learning tools and techniques that can help individuals approach scans with a calmer and more positive mindset.
